What to Know About Ductless HVAC Technologies

Mitsubishi Electric is a leading manufacturer of ductless HVAC technologies. Before we dive into the advantages of their systems, let us first describe what ductless units are and how they work.

As the name suggests, ductless HVAC systems do not use ductwork to provide heating or cooling. Instead, they rely on individual wall-mounted units or air handlers placed in different zones (or rooms) in a building.

These units are connected to an outdoor compressor unit through refrigerant lines, which transfer heat from one place to another to control temperatures. Yes, you can have multiple temperature zones, making individualized comfort possible!

Heat Pumps vs. Ductless Systems

Ductless systems are technically types of heat pumps, as they operate on the same principle: using refrigerant to transfer heat from one place to another. Of course, as we detailed above, ductless systems do not use ductwork. Heat pumps, on the other hand, can be ductless or ducted. Both offer heating and cooling and reduce energy use.

Are Mitsubishi Electric’s Products All Ductless?

No. Mitsubishi Electric produces ducted and ductless heat pumps. Regardless of the model or whether it relies on ductwork, Mitsubishi Electric’s products are energy-efficient, reliable, and versatile. This is among the many reasons we are proud to be a Mitsubishi Electric Ductless Elite Pro contractor.

The Problems Mitsubishi Electric Ductless HVAC Systems Solve

Mitsubishi Electric ductless HVAC systems solve several problems that traditional ducted technologies often struggle with.

Some examples include:

  • Poor air quality: Ductwork is hard to clean, so you can imagine all the dust and allergens lurking in it. With ductless systems, you get much cleaner air because ducts are not necessary.
  • Inefficient temperature control: Ductless units enable precise temperature control by providing heat or cool air directly into specific zones. This can improve comfort and lessen energy costs.
  • Loud operation: Ducted units tend to be noisy. Ductless systems are much quieter, making them ideal for bedrooms, workspaces, apartments, and other areas where traditional HVAC units may be disruptive.
  • High energy consumption: Leaky ductwork can account for energy losses of between 25% and 40%. Ductless units eliminate this issue, resulting in lower energy consumption and costs.
